Meaning, Definition, Nature and Scope of Educational Research

 Meaning of Educational Research: 

 The term educational research comes under the field of education. It is a method to solve the challenges in the field of education using systematic and scientific methods. Educational research refers to a systematic attempt to gain a better understanding of the educational process, generally with a view in improving its efficiency. It is an application of scientific method to the study of educational problems.

Educational research can cover a wide range of topics, including teaching and learning strategies, methods of teaching, curriculum design, student motivation, assessment and evaluation, educational technology, and teacher professional development.

 Definitions:

1Good. “Educational research is the study and investigation in the field of education.”

2Munroe. “The final purpose of educational research is to ascertain principles and develop procedures for use in the field of education.”

3. Mulay. “Any systematic study designed to promote the development of education as a science can be considered educational research.”

 The Nature of Educational Research

The main purpose of educational research is to gain knowledge and solve challenges. It can be done in two methods qualitative and quantitative. Qualitative is centers on the understanding of human behaviors and the reasons behind them. On the other hand, Quantitative centers on a scientific quest that is done through experiments and other methods. The core four natures to list out are as follows:

      i.       Empirical study: It is a study where conclusions are drawn only out of evidence. It is a step-by-step process. Only verified evidence is taken into count. In today’s world, empirical study in the field of education research plays a vital role.

    ii.        Systematic study: Only an up-to-date study with a well-constructed and good foundation. It mainly examines the cause and effect. It improves the efficiency of study. Only this kind of study is employed in educational research for better results.

   iii.        Reliability: As mentioned before, only a reliable source will be taken into account for educational research. Three principles come in under-stability, consistency, and equivalence.

   iv.        Validity: It is a method to measure what is needed to measure in educational research. There should be a core method to cross-check all kinds of information one such method is validity. To check the information based on its validity from all angles.

 Scope of Educational Research:

 

  1. Educational Psychology: Educational psychology research focuses on understanding how individuals learn, develop, and acquire knowledge and skills. This field explores cognitive, emotional, and social factors that influence learning processes, motivation, and behavior in educational settings. Researchers investigate topics such as learning theories, student motivation, cognitive development, classroom management strategies, and the impact of various teaching methods on student outcomes.

 

  1. Philosophy of Education: Research in the philosophy of education delves into fundamental questions about the nature, purpose, and goals of education. This area examines different educational philosophies, ethics in education, and the role of educators in shaping societal values. Researchers critically analyze educational theories and concepts to guide educational practices and policies.

 

  1. Sociology of Education: The sociology of education explores the social structures and dynamics within educational institutions. Researchers study topics such as educational inequality, social stratification, cultural influences on learning, and the impact of socioeconomic factors on educational outcomes. This research sheds light on how social interactions and institutions shape educational experiences.
